In a recent post we discussed making a fire kit for your portable bag. One of the sugested items in the kit was Char Cloth. This catchs a spark very well and kinda make a cole that grows when blown on. Char Cloth is very easy to make. All that is required is cotton cloth and heat.

Old jeans works very good. Cut them in tho 2″ x 2″ squares.

Clean a can and put the cut up jeans in it. A mint tin or anything that can be sealed will also work. This will be placed in a fire so dont use anything that will burn.

Place a piece of foil over the top of the can. Poke 5 or 6 holes in the top.

Place the can in a fire. I usually let it set for an hour.

After an hour remove from the fire. Do not remove the foil right away. When it is hot if you let fresh air in, the Char Cloth will ignite. Once it is cool you can remove it from the can. The stuff that burns off the inside of the can does not affect the Char Cloth.
